Two things. First, I'm trying to practice my English for tomorrow's lecture. Second, I'm trying very hard to stay awake to fight with the jet lag.
A rather chilly day in Cambridge today. I slept much better than expected but also woke up much earlier than needed. My stomach had been empty for a long time but since I didn't get a chance to shop last night, I had nothing to eat. I scavenged what was left in the fridge; a yogurt, two pieces of bread, hoping that was good enough until the next meal. Then I did my routine daily exercise for travels. I need to stay fit......
I had to write something very quickly for the Korea Foundation so I stayed at 'home' most of the morning; I did other silly things such as taking my own photos. Then I ventured on to the street to the Harvard Square, where I met Leehong. By that time, I was almost without any sugar in my body so we went to a Thai restaurant to have some hearty lunch.
Then we started to talk, a kind of talk that only a city like Cambridge, small and intellectual, can aptly foster. We talked about architecture but with so many sub-themes in it. For some reason, things that were murky and vague while I was in Seoul suddenly and miraculously presented themsleves in the bright sunlight. Leehong, equally sensitized, urged me to go home immediately and to write down what we just had discussed, but I'm too tired and sleepy now to do that. Maybe tomorrow morning. Or maybe not.
At least I can say that I realized, at a small cafe near the Harvard Square, that I'm a kind of architect who's equally interested in the art of designing buildings and in the stories that come with it. Might I call myself an architect of narrative?
Leehong went back to his studio (he's wrapping things up for his final semester at Harvard) and I started to walk to a rental car office. I tried Thrifty first, but they didn't have a car drop office in New Haven, so I went over to Avis, just one block away, and bingo, things went quite smoothly there.
On my way home on Bigelow Street, I did some grocery shopping; a chicken breast sandwich, a bottle of water, a can of herring (later it turned out to be too sweet) and a bottle of Samuel Adams. The last item needs some explanation. When I was leaving Korea yesterday, I promised myself that I would stay sober during this lecture tour. Then I decided to give myself a little slack and got that New England beer, my favorite when I myself was a New England resident a long time ago. But the chances are that the beer will be left unopen; it will end up being a nice little gift to my absent landlady, who's in London now.
The pictue above is also a self-portrait. My little Leica has a 10-second timer shutter. |
